The Green Flag is awarded to a school every two years and at present we have three flags for the areas of Litter and Waste, Energy and Water Conservation.
Litter & Waste This is the first theme of the Green-Schools programme. The theme is a great starting point for encouraging a sense of personal pride and responsibility in tackling two visible issues in schools and communities.
Energy This theme looks at the steps which can be taken to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness of climate change issues.
Water The Water theme looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our schools and at home.
Travel The aim of the travel theme was to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school.
Biodiversity flag The meaning of ‘Biodiversity’ is easier to understand when we break the word down; “bio” refers to life and ‘living things’ and “Diversity” means just that: range or variety. The word refers to the huge variety and variation of life that is all around us. The more diversity of living things we have, the better! The environment is stronger, healthier and more resilient when there are lots of different types of plants and animals living in it.
We have just received our 6th Green School Flag on Global Citizenship and Waste see separate page for all our work in this area.
All Flags have to follow the Greens School seven steps - Set up a committee - Carry out an environmental review - Set up an Action Plan - Monitor and Evaluate - Curriculum Work - Inform and Involve - Have a Green Code
