Information about us
Mission statement
That both children and teachers achieve their whole potential academically, socially, physically, morally in a happy atmosphere with effective leadership and teamwork.
A Brief History
It first opened its door over 50 years ago in 1968. There were four schools in the Swanlinbar area now served by Scoil Mhuire, - Uragh Girls; Uragh Boys; Commas and Tiercahan.
Scoil Mhuire now
We currently have three mainstream teachers and one Special Education Teacher. It is a co-educational school which provides a caring, happy and secure environment where all children are encouraged and nurtured in achieving their full potential. Our lower pupil-teacher ratio means children receive small-group attention from an early age. The work of the school is supported by a diligent Board of Management and an active Parents' Association.
We strive to promote and provide a wide range of extra curriculum activities to all children.
We were National Winners of the Bord na Mona 'Eco Rangers' competition focusing on biodiversity we are very proud of this achievement. We are proud to say we are a 'Health Promoting school' and we participate in the Food Dudes campaign to promote eating of fruit and vegetables. We also hold the status of a 'Green School' and are successfully moving along each step of the programme. We are currently working on an Active Schools Flag. See the awards section of the website for evidence of our work.
We have a great interest in GAA and various sports and have achieved great success in the past. We have Gaelic football coaches providing sessions for the children. Other interests include participation in Quizzes, art competitions tin whistle and singing.
Disadvantage Status
The school is involved in DEIS (Educational Disadvantage) Scheme.
School Uniform
A School Uniform is worn during school time and it is available from Craft Cabin, consists of navy trousers/pinafore/skirt, crested blue polo shirt and crested jumper. Plain navy bottoms/shorts and runners should be worn on PE day. It is expected that all children will wear the uniform. Only stud ear rings are permitted for health and safety reasons.
Personal Accident Insurance Scheme
The School participates in a Personal Accident Insurance Scheme. Information is circulated during September. While participation in the scheme is voluntary, the Board of Management strongly recommends that you avail of the cover it provides.
